He is then pursued by a vengeful mob. Taking refuge at home, Bens German connection is revealed when he is blamed by his parents for endangering them. Later, when Ben is a British RFC pilot in Flanders, he is shot down and hospitalised. There, he falls for nurse MOLLY POPPLEFORD, and soon proposes to her. Molly believes she must put her many wounded patients first and says he must ask her when the war is over. Ben meets Molly more than once in the course of this novel but one event makes him unsure of her sincerity. He also encounters Klaus several times along their sector of the Front and they discover that they are related. Fate decrees that they duel in the air more than once, getting to know each other in a variety of situations, and confiding that both deplore the dreadful waste of youth. | |||
